Duane L. Cook

Duane Leroy “Corky” Cook
Of Dexter, Michigan

Age 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. He was born on June 5, 1935 in Ann Arbor, the son of Agnes (Barth) and Russell L. Cook. Duane had lived in the Dexter area since 1973, coming from Ann Arbor. He attended Jones, Mack, Slauson, and Ann Arbor High School, where he graduated in 1953 and was co-captain of the Wrestling Team in his Senior year and won a trophy for State Championship in 1953. He attended Eastern Michigan University from 1954-56 and then worked for two years at the Ann Arbor Post Office. He then spent two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea and Fort Hood, Texas from 1958-60. When he returned to Ann Arbor, he worked at the Post Office again as a Carrier and later as a Supervisor until his retirement in June 1990 after 33 years of employment. He married Faye F. Richards on September 17, 1960 in Ann Arbor and they celebrated 51 years together. His membership in the Ann Arbor Elks #325 was a lifetime membership. He enjoyed being a member of Inverness Golf Course and looked forward to being on Anna Maria Island, Florida every Spring for 30 years. “Corky” was an avid U of M Athletics, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Tigers fan. After he retired, the main question was, “What are you doing?” He would say, “Nothing, but I do it damn well!” A special thank-you to Dr. Jennifer Schwartz at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at U of M Hospital for everything she did. Another special thank-you goes to Gabrielle Cullen and the entire staff at Arbor Hospice. To all those I’ve met at Stivers over the years, thanks for the laughs and fun times but I must say good-bye. Thanks for the memories and until we meet again, “Go Blue!” Surviving are his wife, Faye Cook of Dexter; two children, Clayton “Skeeter” Cook and Kelli Spaulding, both of Chelsea; two grandsons, Dylan Spaulding and Vincent Cook, both of Chelsea; one sister, Nancy (Roland) Schneider of Frankenmuth; his brother-in-law, Lynn Richards of Chelsea; his sister-in-law, Beverly Richards of Ann Arbor; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Deborah (Schneider) Walentovic. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Arbor Hospice Foundation or the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan.
