Louis "Corky" Edward Dreyer

"Corky” Louis Edward Dreyer, of Chelsea, Michigan, passed away at his home on December 30, 2018 at the age of 85. He was the son of Joseph Christopher and Myrtle (Hafner) Dreyer and was born on January 23, 1933 in Chelsea. Corky spent much of his life in the Chelsea area. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1950, where he played basketball, baseball, and track, was President of the Student Council, and played the trumpet in the band. He graduated from Cleary College in 1955, supporting himself as a student by playing trumpet in a jazz band and working at Kroger.

On June 25, 1954, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he married Jana Lou (Weinberg) who survives. Corky was a member of the United States Army Reserves for several years. He and his wife raised their children in Ann Arbor, where he sold life insurance before moving back to Chelsea. For over 30 years, Corky was the owner of Serendipity Book Store in Chelsea, until he retired in 2013. He was an avid golfer and sailor who enjoyed the outdoors and sunshine. He and his wife were fortunate enough to live on their sailboat in North Carolina.

Along with his wife, Corky is survived by his children Luanne Dreyer (Robert) Elliott, Tina (Michael) Kliman, and Mark (Betsy) Dreyer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jack and Nicholas Elliott; Jason, Jeffrey (Courtney), Samantha, and Scott Kliman; and Stephen (Sueann) Dreyer and Joe Dreyer. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Kori, Kolson, and Kody Dreyer, and Addison Kliman. Corky was preceded in death by his siblings, Ambrose “Joe” Dreyer and Genevieve “Jenny" Harris.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chelsea First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joy Barrett officiating. The family will receive friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church prior to the service. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Chelsea Faith in Action, Chelsea First United Methodist Church, or the Unity Church of Jackson.

Jana, I am so sorry to hear of Corky's passing. I will not be able to go to the visitation or the funeral due to my surgery on Friday. You and Corky have been dear friends. I pray for you and your family. May God keep you in his loving arms. Sam and Nancy Alguire
