Guy Blackmon

Guy G. Blackmon, age 88, of Milan, MI, passed away on April 10, 2019 at Arbor Hospice in Saline, MI.  He was born on April 21, 1930 in the City of East Ann Arbor, MI, the son of Benjamin and Hazel (Gibson) Blackmon. He lived in Washtenaw County his entire life.

Guy was a proud Korean War Veteran, serving as a combat medic in the Army from 1952 to 1953. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for the City of East Ann Arbor Police Department, and then for Washtenaw County as a Deputy Sheriff, retiring from there in 1973.  Never being idle, Guy then worked 16 years at the Chrysler Proving Grounds as a Security Officer and Test Driver, retiring from the Chrysler Corporation in October 1989. After a period of traveling with his loving wife, Emily, Guy came out of retirement at age 67 to rejoin the ranks of Washtenaw County as a groundskeeper for the Pierce Lake Golf Course community. At age 86, Guy fully retired. Guy was also a proud member of the American Legion Herbert J. McKune Post 31, and St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea.  Guy’s hobbies included playing cards, woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening, and camping.

Guy was a compassionate public servant, who shared his affection of public service and law enforcement through his engagement of Washtenaw County’s youth. Under the leadership of Sheriff Doug Harvey, Guy was instrumental in establishing the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department’s Junior Deputy Program. Over time, many of Washtenaw County’s law enforcement and fire service professionals evolved from this program. To the day, Guy took immense pride in watching his Junior Deputies pursue their careers and aspirations. Guy loved people and possessed the ability to engage everyone, no matter of their race, gender or creed. Anyone who ever met Guy would be greeted with a warm smile and strong hand shake followed by an engaging conversation that would last forever. He had a big heart and a special gift to accept everyone. He was known and loved by so many. Even when traveling thousands of miles away from home, wherever Guy and Emily went, they were sure to meet someone he knew, whether it be from his military and/or law enforcement career, or from his Ann Arbor and Chelsea community connections.

Guy is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Emily (Rathman) Blackmon. Also surviving are his children: Andy (Laura) Box, Catherine (Bob) Taylor, brother-in-law, Thomas (Penny) Rathman; five grandchildren, David (girlfriend Chelsea Swanson) Box, Thomas (fiancée Rachel Shultz) Box, Taylor Walters, Courtney and Dru Taylor; and special friends Doug (Marleyn) Eder and their son, Adrian, and Debbie Hilbouk. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Nancy Cornell, whom they had three daughters (Diana, Jackie and Bonnie); also five siblings: Bob, George, Herbert, Myrtle, and Ruth.

On Monday, April 29, 2019, the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. Guy’s close friend, Gary Reed, will officiate the memorial service, while the American Legion Herbert J. McKune Post 31, City of Ann Arbor Police Department and Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard Details will honor Guy during the visitation and memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made in the name of Guy G. Blackmon to Helping Area Response Teams (HART) Huron Valley, which is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that provides on-site support to all emergency responders in Washtenaw County. HART Huron Valley’s mailing address is HART Huron Valley, 8260 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103, or please visit HART’s website at www.hhv.care
