Gwendolyn Proegler

Gwendolyn Angle Proegler, age 81, of Chelsea, MI, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at her home with family by her side. Gwenn was born Feb. 21, 1938 in Greencastle, PA.  She was the only child of Florence (Whitmore) and Henry W. Angle. She graduated from Waynesboro Area Central High School in 1956 and from Carnegie Mellon University in 1960 with a B.A. degree in Theater Design. She was a professional designer at Maidstone Interior Design (Hagerstown, MD) when she met her husband, Lolt Proegler, in a Waynesboro community theater production of See How They Run. They were married June 1, 1963.

Gwenn had a flair for fashion and costume design throughout her life.  As a child, she created elaborate outfits for her paper dolls, and she was the first at her high school to wear Bermuda shorts. In college, she delved deep into period costume design. She created many memorable costumes for Halloween parties, school pageants and her children’s theater productions. In 1980, she joined Ann Arbor Civic Theater where she costumed at least five major musicals and seven plays. She received AACT’s Best Costume Design Award for Pippin (1983), Hello Dolly! (1984) and Bells Are Ringing (1985).

As the wife of an Army officer, Gwenn adapted readily to frequent moves.  In every place she unpacked boxes, she created comfortable homes expressing her distinctive style. Military assignments took the family from Pennsylvania, to Bremerhaven, Germany, to Ft. Jackson, SC; Ft. Riley, KS; Columbus, OH; Ft. Benning, GA; and finally to Ft. Belvoir, VA. After leaving the military in 1977, the family settled in Ann Arbor, MI.  Lolt’s work later took the couple to Alexandria, VA, then back to Ann Arbor for several years before they retired to a spacious house in Brooklyn, MI, well-suited for the Proegler family reunions that Gwenn and Lolt enjoyed hosting. After Lolt’s death, Gwenn moved to Chelsea in 2018 to be closer to her son and his family. Together with Lolt, the love of her life, Gwenn especially enjoyed her grandchildren, bridge and Scrabble (she usually won), fine dining and theater vacations to Stratford, Ontario.  Her family will miss her amazing culinary repertoire, special holiday meals and celebrations, and especially her hugs.

Gwenn is survived by daughter and son-in-law Heidi and Dan Chay of Kenai, AK; son and daughter-in-law David and Sarah Proegler, of Chelsea, MI; grandchildren Maya and Freya Chay, Zoe, Matthew and Bennett Proegler; brothers-in-law John (Lynn), Kurt (Carol), Mark (Amy) and Joel (Christine) Proegler; sister-in-law Susan Proegler Bevis; and fourteen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Lolt (d. 2017), mother Florence (d. 2009) and father Henry (d. 1989).

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, MI at 12:00 p.m. with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gwenn’s memory can be made to Michigan Radio, 91.7 FM Ann Arbor/Detroit.
