Kathleen A. Salopek

Kathleen A. Salopek, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Grass Lake, MI, Laurel, MD, and Battle Creek, MI, age 72, passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Chelsea Retirement Community-Towsley Village. She was born January 4, 1947 in South Haven, MI the daughter of Charles E. and Dorothy L. (Langhenry) Sherwood. She is survived by her husband, Phillip A. Salopek, two children, Maureen (Brian) Noble of Ann Arbor, MI, and Phillip (Cindy) Salopek of Clarksville, MD, four grandchildren: Scott, Erica, Russell, and Caroline; as well as siblings: Rebecca (Robert) Green of Battle Creek, MI, Lisa (Michael) Pessetti of Hastings, MI, Kevin (Ludasha) Sherwood of FL, Matthew (Patty) Sherwood of IN, Amy (Jim) Lewis of TX, and sister-in-law, Kathryn (Abe) Villalobos of AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Kathy had lived in the Grass Lake area for the past ten years, moving from Maryland. She was the Salutatorian of the St. Philip High School Class of 1965. She was also a proud Michigan State Alumni and member of its notable honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Master’s degree in Management and Consumer Studies from the University of Maryland, and worked as the Director of Accounts Receivable for the Affiliated Santé Group in Maryland. Kathleen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea. She was an accomplished artist in many media, including watercolor painting, textile arts, and clay. In her later years she especially enjoyed quilting with her sisters and friends, and she loved to read murder mysteries. She was deeply devoted to her family, and enjoyed annual trips to the Outer Banks, NC with them.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019, 1:00 p.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea with V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior to the time of service. Memorial contributions in Kathleen’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the UMRC Heritage Fund.
