John Mitchell
Owner/Manager

Licensed Funeral Director
Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home
Stockbridge, MI

John joined the business in 1990 after graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. After 30 years in the industry, his passion for funeral directing and the families he serves is still strong. He has contributed to the community in various roles; in the early days as the Tail Twister for the Chelsea Lions Club and as a member of the Inverness Country Club Board of Directors. After his own bout with cancer and treatment at Chelsea Community Hospital, he committed to volunteering countless hours working for the development of the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Cancer Center. He has also served on the Patient Advisory Board for St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital, as well as the Board of Directors for Farmers State Bank in Munith.

John loves antique cars, tractors, and boat motors. Any Chelsea Parade wouldn’t be the same without him flinging frisbees atop an antique hearse or simply driving an antique tractor in the annual Holiday Light Parade or Homecoming Parade. He is passionate about the Chelsea Community Fair, being involved in the Livestock Auction and announcing the Antique Tractor Pulls. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing in Canada, Lake Michigan and Florida, hunting, or just relaxing by the water.

She and John raised their four children, Wesley, Mason, AJ, and Sophie in the Chelsea community. Together they enjoy watching their children’s various sporting events as well as band and orchestra events. Throughout the years Cindy has volunteered for the schools, Chelsea Community Hospital, Ele’s Place, and for the Chelsea Athletic Boosters. In her spare time she enjoys health and wellness activities, reading, and gardening.

Michael Mitchell
Owner/Manager

Licensed Funeral Director
Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home
Chelsea, MI

In 2004, Michael returned to Mitchell Funeral Homes, bringing ten years of environmental work experience and a passion for Green Burial to the family business. He attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and Michigan State University. Michael served three years on the Board of Directors for the Green Burial Council and at that time, was the only licensed funeral director on the board and in the nation with a degree in Environmental Science. Michael’s knowledge about Green Burial provides further breadth to the special care that Mitchell Funeral Homes offer.

Michael and his wife Stacey reside in Chelsea where they have raised their two sons. He was the president of the CHS Lacrosse Association and has served on many boards both locally and nationally. He is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Rod and Gun Club, and is passionate about fly fishing, bird hunting with his black lab Lily, the outdoors, and the environment.

Staffan History

Founded in 1853 by Frank Staffan, the funeral home business has been passed down from father to son for several generations. The Mitchell family moved to Chelsea in 1981. John Sr. and Gloria Mitchell bought the Staffan Funeral Home from George and Kathryn Staffan, ending a four-generation Staffan legacy. Click here to read more.

Caskey History

Funeral Service in Stockbridge is provided by the Mitchell Family. John and Gloria, and son Johnny and his wife Cindy purchased the business from the Caskey family in August of 1995. In 2004 Mike Mitchell joined the business and now the brothers run the operation together.
