Betty L. (White) MacDonald

Betty MacDonald-web 2.jpg

Betty L. (White) MacDonald passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Betty Lou White was born on Monday. August 20, 1951 to proud first-time parents, Elizabeth (Tolk) and Louis James White.

Betty was greeted on the other side by her parents, and she left behind many friends and family. The older sister of Ann and Louis John, she grew up in Troy, MI, spending summers at the family cottage in Lake Orion. Betty graduated from Troy High School and continued on to Wayne State University to study medical technology. Over the years, she worked at Wayne County General, Huron Valley, Saint Mary, and Saint Joseph Mercy Hospitals.

Betty and ex-husband, Bob, happily raised two children, Ian and Kate. Betty gained an extra son when Kate married Brandon Berridge. She was the mother he never had.

They loved to play board games, eat (dairy free) ice cream, hunt for cool rocks on the beach, watch the sunset, and stay up way past bedtime to read stories. Punctuality was not her strong suit, but love and patience were! Her curiosity and love of learning were insatiable. Her love of science and doing crafts live on in her family’s interests. Ann E. Feeney

FEENEY, ANN v2.jpg

Ann Ellen Feeney passed away in the early morning of July 27, 2020, in Chelsea, MI. She had spent the previous 10 days in Hospice care at home, sharing time, talk, and gardening adventures with her husband, Michael, and their six children.

Ann was born on January 12, 1935, in Detroit, MI, to Harold Walter and Helen Beatrice (Ryan) Moore. She graduated from St. Mary’s of Redford High School in Detroit in 1953, and received her bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College in 1957. She married Michael Feeney in 1958. They remained married for 62 years until Ann’s death.

In 1972, Ann and Michael moved their family from Detroit to Chelsea. Ann loved her adopted hometown, where she built an inspiring legacy of civic and community service. Not long after arriving in Chelsea, Ann started volunteering at the St. Louis School for Children and Adults with Disabilities, and driving several times a week for Meals on Wheels. She drove for Meals on Wheels for 43 years. She was also a long-time volunteer at Spaulding for Children and the United Methodist Retirement Home. She served on the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Chelsea, WAVE, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Washtenaw County, the Chelsea Community Foundation, Helpsource, Chelsea Community Kitchen, the UMRC Heritage Foundation, the Purple Rose Theater, and many others.

Ann held many civic roles in Chelsea for years. She was elected to the Chelsea Board of Education in 1976. She served on the School Board from 1976 to 1986, and from 1987 to 1991. In 2002, she was elected to the Chelsea City Charter Commission, which oversaw the Village of Chelsea’s incorporation as a city. She was elected the City of Chelsea’s first mayor in 2004. She served as mayor until 2009, when she was elected to the Chelsea City Council, on which she served until 2013.

In 1994, the Village of Chelsea began awarding a Citizen of the Year award. Ann was its inaugural recipient. Her Alma Mater, Marygrove College in Detroit, named her its Distinguished Alumna for 2003.

Ann loved her 15 grandchildren, who loved her back with fierce and tender devotion (her two great-grandchildren were just getting to know her when she passed away). She loved gardening, and she maintained a beautiful set of gardens around her Chelsea home. She could be seen on every sort of day walking about her yard with a gardener’s focus—pruning, digging, planting, and picking.

Ann Feeney lived a whole life, which for her, was not a matter of amassing experiences and maximizing enjoyments, but of understanding her purposes in this world and realizing them, through tireless, joyful effort and loving indifference to her own ego. She was an example of the personal fulfillment that comes from serving other people and serving God. She was a deep, steady source of inspiration and advice for family, friends, and colleagues. A committed Christian, she was baptized into the Catholic Church as an infant and remained a devoted servant of the Church for her entire life. St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea was her spiritual home for 48 years.

Ann is survived by Michael Feeney, her husband of 62 years; their six children, Peter (Patti), Marc (Julianna), Matthew (Juliet Arechiga), Cara Drenth (Walter), Molly, and Michael (Hyo Kyung); 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her five siblings, Mary D. Hubbell, Katie Galli, Helen Therese Perry, Denise Evan, and Bernie Moore.

Our thanks to Joanne Randall, Karen Ruhlig, Tina Bednarski-Lynch, and to the staff of St. Joseph Mercy Hospice and Comfort Keepers. And special thanks to Becky and Diane for going above and beyond during Ann’s final days.

Private services will be held. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Ann may do so to Faith In Action , the St. Louis Center, or Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea.

Thomas Rayer

Rayer, Thomas.jpg

Thomas Norbert Rayer passed away peacefully at home on July 22, 2020, while watching a cowboy movie. He was 79 years young. Tom was born on December 3, 1940 to Robert and Mary Rayer in Ann Arbor, MI, where he remained for his entire life. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa, and friend.

He grew up playing with family and childhood friends in the “Pace-Rayer” Woods, which is now the Sequoia Parkway neighborhood. Tom married the love of his life, Patricia Maloney, on October 29, 1960 after a three-month courtship. He always jokingly told Pat that “she married a good man,” and, indeed, she did. He was known around Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities for his strong work ethic, commitment to quality, and willingness to help anyone. He successfully ran his own business, Rayer Decorating, for over 30 years. Working with his hands not only provided him with a solid career, but also his favorite hobby. There was nothing his hands could not craft from a piece of wood. He spent hours in his workshop producing beautiful pieces from shelves to dollhouses to churches to unique tables that can be found in homes from Michigan to Florida. Treasured keepsakes from a treasured man.

Tom never encountered a stranger. Every person he met became an extended member of his family. Friends dating back to 1945. 75 years of friendship. Nearly 60 years of marriage. He and Pat had three children, yet there were always more kids around. And they still come around! Tom mentored many and served as a father figure to countless young adults. Over the years, “UT” fixed way too many car dents to count, and helped his nieces, nephews, and grandkids get into mischief whenever he could. He was a big kid at heart who was full of jokes. And full of love. The love he had for his family was unmatched. Generational “guy trips” to Kenton and Lima, OH. Family trips to Sarasota, FL, hosting fish fries and scouting garage sales. He taught many how to fish, enjoyed hunting, and absolutely adored his dogs. He loved fishing in his son’s pond and hosting the most epic family picnics. Tom’s life was truly about family. His home with Pat was always the place everyone wanted to be, and it continues to be the “cool” place for their grandchildren and their friends to spend time.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, father, Robert, stepfather, William Holl, and sisters, Mary (Sis) Nicholson and Marj Moon. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; their children, Tommy Rayer (Laura), Shelly Theros (Dean), and Billy Rayer; their grandchildren, Christina, Cara, Heather, and Thomas; and great- granddaughter, Avery. Tom is also survived by two sisters, Mick Quackenbush and Sally Jarvi (Bill), and two brothers, Nick Rayer (Donna) and Robert Rayer (Marilyn); sisters-in-law, Cecelia Winkle and Chrissie Mattie (Patrick) and brothers-in-law, William Maloney (Topper) and Joseph Maloney (Chris); and an endless number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, dear friends, and an extended family that reaches far beyond blood. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be missed by many.

A private burial service is planned for the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Tom’s name to Elara Caring Hospice, 900 Cooper St., Jackson, MI 49202. Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.
