James K. Brakke

James Kirk Brakke, age 78, of Chelsea, MI, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, in Jackson, MI.

James was born on September 23, 1946, in Ypsilanti, MI, the son of Harlan and Margaret (Olson) Brakke. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He had lived in the Chelsea area since 2018, moving from Ypsilanti.

James worked in technology sales, representing engineering design companies and specializing in 3-D software simulation. He was both a techy, who couldn’t resist a fancy new gadget, and a lover of outdoor adventures, whether simply running in the neighborhood or visiting beautiful places. He loved Motown music, sports (he followed all the Detroit and University of Michigan teams), and animals, especially the family cats and dogs.

On December 3, 1983, he married Nancy J. (McClelland), and she survives. Also surviving are four children: James (Marlene) Kirian of Florida, Todd (Michelle Merrell) Brakke of Indiana, Christopher (Amber) Kirian of Howell, and Katie Kirian of Georgia; nine grandchildren; his siblings: Jon (Mickie) Brakke of Tecumseh, Michael Brakke of Coldwater, and Pam (Joe) Benson of Rothbury, MI; Todd’s mother, Gayle (John) Amos of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. Surviving as well are many lifelong best friends, who supported him through to the end.

Special thanks to the many people who helped the family through this time of need: the VA Home-Based Primary Care Program, all of the loving caretakers at Jackson County Medical Care Facility, Elara Caring Hospice, and Jim’s respite care provider, Lisa. Very special thanks also to Jon and Mickie Brakke, and Walt and Bev Schmid, who were always on call to come over at a moment’s notice.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Inverness Country Club Clubhouse on North Territorial Road in Chelsea. Gathering will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a time of remembrance at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon to follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson’s, or K9s For Warriors.

Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.
