Norman Edward Ion

Norman Edward Ion, age 72, of Grass Lake, MI, passed away on August 30, 2026 at his home with his family by his side.

Norman was born on June 9, 1954, to Jack E. and Shirley A. (Fournier) Ion. He married Dianne (Thurston) on August 19, 1972 in Dearborn Heights, MI, and together they shared 54 years of marriage. He worked for General Motors as a Tool and Die Maker, retiring in 2015 after 32 years of service. Norman and Dianne resided in Livonia for many years and moved to the Grass Lake area in 2002. They were members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea.

Norman was a man of vision who always found a way to make his dreams and ideas happen. He was a perfectionist and a true do-it-yourselfer who could do anything he set his mind to. He could remodel the interior of a home and redo the landscaping, transforming a house and making it feel new again. Norman approached everything with determination and attention to detail. He also loved setting up and creating layouts for model trains, taking pride in every detail of his work.

Norman is survived by his spouse, Dianne Ion; his son, Steven (Kimberley) Ion; and his grandchildren: Jessica, Mathew, Michael, Jennifer, Madison, and Carter. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Ion of Dearborn Heights, and his sisters, Genevieve (Janine Shefka) Dumaurier of Canton and Nancy Shields of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 12:00 noon until the time of service.
