Deanna M. DeVoy

Deanna M. DeVoy, age 49, of Wayne, MI, unexpectedly passed away at Beaumont Hospital - Wayne on July 14, 2021. She was born in Ann Arbor, MI on March 22, 1972, daughter of Franklin T. and Donna M. DeVoy.

Deanna attended Baker College, and then she worked as a healthcare aide. Her favorite things to do were helping people and animals.

She is survived by her brother, Franklin T. (Sandy) DeVoy, Jr. of Chelsea, MI, and her sister, Danielle Clark of Grass Lake, MI; her stepfather, Dean Clark of Michigan Center, MI; and two nieces and one nephew. Deanna was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Michael D. Clark.

Claire M. Timko

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

Claire M. Timko, 52, of Howell, MI, passed away on July 12, 2021 at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on May 29, 1969, in Baltimore, MD, Claire is the daughter of John and Dolores (Niemur) Hughesman. On February 16, 2005, in Howell, she married Jay P. Timko, and he survives.

Claire was a graduate of South Lyon High School and she attended college, living in the Howell area for 30 years. She enjoyed practicing Wicca, playing hockey, and acting with the Pinckney Players theater group as well as various background acting roles in movies shot in Michigan. Claire loved nature and animals. For years, Claire was a wonderful caregiver for the elderly.

In addition to her husband, Jay, survivors include their children, Cameron Hughesman Timko and Beckham Hughesman Timko, both of Howell, and Kari Timko, Jordan Timko, and Nicholas Timko, all of Durand, MI; one grandchild, Josette; as well as cousins, Adam Niemur and Eric Niemur. She was predeceased by her parents.

A Graveside Service is scheduled for Friday, July 16, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at The Preserve at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford, MI. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Claire may be made to the family at PO Box 85, Howell, MI 48844.

Robert L. Sooy

Robert Lee Sooy, of Westland, MI, formerly of Ypsilanti, age 73, passed away on July 10, 2021 at the Cherry Hill Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Westland. He was born in Stockbridge, MI on April 24, 1948, the son of Sherman and Viola (Risner) Sooy. Rob served in the US Air Force from 1973 to 1975. He resided in Ypsilanti for many years, but before that, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, and Florida. Rob loved cats, and he enjoyed Native American art—especially featuring wolves.

Rob is survived by his uncles, Patrick H. Risner of Dansville, MI, and Sonny Risner of Fitchburg, MI, and one aunt, Dorothy Risner also of Dansville, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, Rob has been cremated. A private Graveside Service will be held at Fitchburg Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Rob’s name to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Arrangements by Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge.

Larry B. Brink

On July 8, 2021, many hearts were broken by the loss of the kind and beautiful soul of Larry Bruce Brink, who died at 66 years young. He was born on January 18, 1955, in Ann Arbor, MI, son of Ron Brink and Ellen Smith, who both preceded him in death. His wife, Kerri Pranger, his brothers, Randy Brink and Doug (Pat) Brink, his sister Cathy (Marty) Thomson, his daughter, Brandy Marino, and his grandsons, Gianni and Cristiano Marino, will forever miss him and his big heart, generous spirit, and witty sense of humor. His sister, Laurie Tear, also preceded him in death, and she was dearly missed by Larry. His absence will be felt by family and friends, alike, as well as both the Meijer and Lowe’s stores on Jackson Road, and the Pepsi-Cola Company, maker of Mountain Dew.

From an early age, Larry was a character. At age three, he surprised his family with a house fire, after playing with matches under the bed. At eight, he wrote a letter to the Beach Boys, which impressed them enough to send photos and paraphernalia in return. Growing up, Larry worked with his father, watching, learning, and developing an amazing talent for carpentry, which led to a career in construction. A master of all trades, Larry could do just about anything—rough framing, finish carpentry, plumbing and electrical, as well as auto repair. Not a huge fan of authority, he enjoyed working for himself. His work ethic, passion for quality, and easy-going personality earned him a following of loyal clients.

In 1979, Larry became a father. A true kid-at-heart and a loving dad, he and his daughter, Brandy, made many happy memories—fishing, listening to Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam, practicing for driver’s ed (before age 10), and sharing lots of laughs.

In 1984, he met his best friend and future wife, Kerri. True partners, they worked together to transform their lives, proceeding on a five-year mission to change their small house in Ann Arbor into a beautiful and spacious home, which Larry designed himself.

In 1998, they finally tied the knot. Through their 37 years together, they shared a close bond and deep love, growing together in quiet Christianity, and sticking together through thick and thin. Larry practiced many of the fruit of the Spirit characteristics: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and gentleness. He was a generous man, always thinking of others’ needs before his own. Larry would give you the shirt off his back, which was probably why he so rarely wore one.

In 2009, Larry proudly earned the title of grandfather, and instantly loved his grandsons, Gianni and Cristiano, with his whole heart. Larry was a wonderful grandpa, watching the boys weekly, playing right alongside them, letting them cover the kitchen counter with trains, feeding them Oreos, and even doing midnight blankie runs in times of crisis.

A visitation is scheduled for on Friday, July 16, 2021, 5-7:30 p.m., with a service beginning at 7:30 p.m., led by Rev. Kathy Schell, at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea. At a later date, Larry will be buried in Bloomington Cemetery in Platte, SD, alongside many generations of Kerri’s family. Rosemary Hummel

Rosemary Hummel, age 93, a life-long resident of Chelsea, passed away on July 9, 2021 at Silver Maples of Chelsea, where she resided since 2010. Before relocating to Silver Maples, Rosemary had lived in the home on McKinley Street that her parents, John R. and Agnes M. (Brady) Hummel, purchased in 1921; a home they managed to hold onto throughout the long years of the Depression when so many others were not so lucky.

Rosemary was born April 28, 1928 in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1946. The week following graduation, she began work as a bank teller at Chelsea State Bank, where she remained in various positions for the next 49 years. Illness forced her into retirement one year short of her 50th anniversary year. At the time of her retirement, she was an Assistant Vice President for the bank. She was patient and kind, friendly to those around her, and she always remembered a friendly face.

In addition to her work at the bank, Rosemary was also a life-long and devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea, where she also donated her time in parish affairs and finances. In addition to attending Mass on every Sunday and on Holy Days, she was also a member of the choir for many years. Rosemary loved music and played the piano since she was young. When moving to Silver Maples it was one of the few possessions she insisted on taking with her, and she played regularly as she adjusted to her new environment. She also enjoyed reading and doing puzzles.

Throughout her working life, she traveled with friends, visiting most of the major cities on the Eastern Seaboard, and then in the late 60’s and 70’s, she began trips to Britain and major European cities. One of note was her Holy Week trip to Rome and her attendance at Easter Mass on Sunday where Pope Paul celebrated; there was tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s Pietà – the Chapel especially was a event that she remembered with awe for years.

Rosemary was a skilled and avid bowler, and along with her sister, Virginia, could be found every Wednesday evening during the winter at Chelsea Lanes competing on the Women’s Bowling League for close to 40 years, where she was known to bowl many 300 games. She was also a very experienced seamstress, having learned the skill from her mother, who made patterns and designed clothing for both Virginia and Rosemary as they were growing up. Her wardrobe reflected her skill, sense of color, and an ability to choose designs that favored her height and lean physique. She always looked perfectly put together.

Rosemary was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Hummel, who died as a young child, her younger brother, John J. “Jack” Hummel of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in 1998, and Virginia (Hummel) McClear of Chelsea, in 2000. She is survived by two nieces and one nephew from Virginia’s marriage to Glenn McClear: Mary Lu McClear (Stephen) Chase of Randolph, New Jersey, Michelle McClear of Los Angeles, CA, and Matthew M. (Toni) McClear of Palm Springs, CA; and two nieces from Jack Hummel’s marriage: Donna Hummel Graziose of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Heidi Hummel of Cumberland, Rhode Island. There are also seven great-nieces and great-nephews who come down from the Hummel family line, and one great-great-niece, who is just beginning her life and will turn one year old at the end of next month.

To celebrate a long and well-lived life, Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with the V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea.

Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Larry E. McClure

Larry Edward McClure, age 69, passed away peacefully in his residence in Chelsea, MI, on July 6, 2021, and he is now at home with Christ after an extended battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Adrian, MI on January 3, 1952, son of the late Daryle Edward and Doris Jane (Moore) McClure. On August 14, 1993, in East Lansing, MI, he was united in marriage to Deborah Ann Wauer at the MSU Chapel on campus.

Larry graduated from Onsted High School, and was a graduate of Western Michigan University, majoring in Business Administration. In his professional life, Larry was an analyst with Consumers Energy, retiring in 2010 after decades of service. Larry was an active sports enthusiast and enjoyed running, bicycling, hiking, and other outdoor activities. He was a beloved husband and friend who loved Christ, his family, his community, and his nation. Larry’s Christian faith was an essential part of his life, giving himself and those around him encouragement and strength. His positive attitude, inspirational words, and smile are unforgettable.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah, of Chelsea; his sister, Sandra Lee Stark (Jerry) of Jackson, MI; and two nieces. Larry was predeceased by his parents.

A Memorial Service is being held on Monday, July 12, 2021, 3:00 p.m., at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea. A gathering of friends and family will take place the same day, 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Immediately following the Memorial Service, a meal will be shared at the Dexter Gospel Church, 2253 Baker Road, Dexter, MI. Murray E. "Gene" Smith

Murray Eugene “Gene” Smith, age 87, of Chelsea, MI, passed away at the Chelsea Retirement Community on July 7, 2021. He was born in Ann Arbor, MI on September 5, 1933, the son of Murray J.A. and Juliette Josephine (Wines) Smith.

Gene grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from Pioneer High School. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. In 1958, he married Gertrude E. Wente, and in 1972 they moved to Inverness Golf Course, where he and Gertrude were life-long members. He enjoyed playing in the Inverness Golf Men’s League, as well as playing cards every Wednesday night in the “Fraternal Order of Euchre” league. He was passionate about conservation and nature and was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Whitetails Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club, and the Ann Arbor Moose. He was also a member of the Dexter American Legion. Gene was the founder and sole proprietor of Pinnacle Engineering in Manchester, MI, operating it for 51 years.

Gene is survived by his son, Bradley (Julie) Smith of Manchester; four grandchildren, Cory (Sam) Smith, Trevor Smith, Steve (Lindsey) Henes, and Tim Henes; five great-grandchildren, Logan, Emersyn, Max, Mason, and Michael; sister, Diane (Kenneth) Smith-Harrison of Plymouth; and sister-in-law, Patricia Smith of Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Gertrude Smith, his daughter, Leslie M. Smith-Figg, and brother, Gary W. Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Burial will follow at North Lake Cemetery. Gerald F. "Jerry" Bradley

Gerald F. “Jerry” Bradley, age 87, of Chelsea, MI, passed away at his home on July 4, 2021. He was born in Detroit, MI on October 17, 1933, the son of Joseph and Frances (Rakowsky) Bradley. Jerry attended high school at St. Philip Neri and Cass Tech in Detroit. He became a Benedictine Monk, and later an ordained Catholic Priest. In 1969, he received dispensation from the priesthood, and in 1970, he married Rose Anne (Heck) in Detroit, MI. He earned his Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan, and he worked as a librarian for the Detroit Public Library. He then worked for over 40 years for Northwestern Mutual Life as an insurance sales agent, working in Detroit and later in Ann Arbor.

Jerry had a love of reading and sharing of books. He delighted in long discussions on any topic. He also enjoyed doing needlepoint. Most of all he was devoted to his family, and he enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Rose Bradley, as well as their children, Charles (Claire) Bradley, Daniel (Erin) Bradley, Brendan Bradley, and Mary Bradley; seven grandchildren: Tigerlily, Kasmira, Aruna, Conor, Corbin, Elias, and Bo; and three brothers, Frank (Ann) Bradley of Grosse Pointe Shores, Jim (Diane) Bradley of Shelby Twp., and Tom (Glenda) Bradley of Baxter, TN. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Joseph G. Bradley, and his youngest brother, Joseph W. Bradley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., also at church on Monday from 10-11 a.m.

Judith M. Promo

Judith Mary Promo (nee Marshall), a long-time resident of Florida, passed away peacefully June 6, 2021 in Ann Arbor, MI, with her daughters by her side.

Judy was born August 31, 1938 in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1974, she married Richard E. Promo, who preceded her in death in 1998.

They made a life raising three daughters in Hartland, MI. She enjoyed music, and was often found dancing to Motown tunes in the kitchen!

After moving to Florida in 1999, Judy became an avid traveler; cruising to warm tropical climates, and walking on the beach were favorite pastimes. But, Judy found her greatest joy as a Grandma!

Judy is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Brian Simons, Laura and Randy Hoffman, and Melissa and Will Eby; plus, her six beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Grace, Spencer, Will, and Jack. She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Andrew Marshall, sister, Sally Marshall, and brother, Daniel Marshall.

John L. Parks

John Lawrence Parks, age 69, of St. Helen, MI, passed away on July 1, 2021 in Auburn, MI. He was born on November 11, 1951 in Jackson, MI, the son of John Edward and Genevieve (Guinan) Parks. He married Donna Jean Karnes in July of 1986, and she preceded him in death after 33 years of marriage.

He served our country in the US Navy, and his favorite pastimes were trapping, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his horses. He loved his Native American heritage. John was his own person, and he visited and experienced every state in the continental US via hitchhiking.

Survivors include his siblings, Jane Schertzing, Dan Parks, Eric Parks, Alicia Parks, and Annie Hoard; his half brother, Bobbi Lazurus; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife, Donna, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lela Parks, and brothers-in-law, Richard Hoard and Christopher Schertzing.

A Funeral Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, 2021, 1:00 p.m., at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Craig Goodlock officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Munith Cemetery.
