Delphine Marie (Grzegorczyk) Thomas, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, at the age of 84 in Chelsea, Michigan.
Born in Midland, Michigan to Edmund and Clara Grzegorczyk, Delphine grew up alongside her siblings Ray and Lorri, grounded in faith, family, and hard work.
She attended St. Brigid School and graduated from Midland High School in 1959 before earning nursing degrees from Mercy Central School of Nursing, Saint Louis University, and her Master’s degree from the University of Iowa. She taught pediatric nursing at Cardinal Glennon Hospital and later at Delta College.
At SLU, Del met her match and love, Dr. John William Thomas. They married on September 18, 1965, beginning a 53 year partnership built on faith, friendship, chemistry and laughter. After John’s death in 2018, she missed the companionship of her best friend every day.
Del’s greatest joy was her family. She devoted herself to raising their five daughters with humor, love and unwavering dedication. As a grandmother, she was a champion spectator. She logged countless hours reading stories, playing board games, and traveling across several states to attend recitals, plays, graduations, and any event that mattered to her grandchildren.
A longtime member of St. Andrew Parish in Upper Arlington, Ohio, Delphine generously shared her time as a room mother, cafeteria volunteer, and Girl Scout leader. Her faith informed not only what she believed, but how she cared for others.
Delphine had a gift for making people feel welcome, remembered, and loved. She celebrated others’ accomplishments enthusiastically, while downplaying her own. She took great pride in supporting John’s career and encouraging her daughters’ interests, education, and independence. Before there was Uber, there was Del’s station wagon.
Although herself an introvert and sports fan, Del embraced her dramatic daughters and poured her love and energy into the Bishop Watterson High School marching band, theater and choir programs. She organized uniforms and fundraisers, hosted legendary cast and band parties, and videotaped every show, copying hundreds of VHS tapes to share with other parents.
She redirected her enthusiasm for her Tigers, Hawkeyes, Buckeyes, and Fighting Irish toward cheering on student performers on all kinds of stages.
To many of her daughters’ friends, she was simply “Mom.” She passed along a love of reading and created decades of treasured Disney World memories, from the family’s first trip in 1978 to her final visit in December 2025. She never missed an episode of The Bachelor and reveled in the thrill of Macy’s clearance sales while sharing her wisdom about avoiding anything that required ironing.
Until the very end, she found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: her cat Toby, a good doughnut, hot black coffee, a sunset at North Lake, and daily calls from her daughters and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband.
She is survived by her daughters, Rachel Thomas Cronin (Brendan), Meagen Thomas (David), Sarah Thomas Fazeli, Bridget Thomas Muckle (Tim), and Erin Thomas Lobo (Max); her cherished grandchildren, Lindsay (Stephen), Johannah, Molly, Tom, John, Gabe, Luke, Abby, Sam, Stella, Grayson and Vivienne; her great-grandson, Charlie; and countless extended family members, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Silver Maples Retirement Community and Assisted Living, as well as the caregivers of St. Croix Hospice, for their expertise and compassion.
A Memorial Mass and celebration of Delphine’s life at St. Andrew Parish will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bishop Watterson High School’s band and theater departments in her name.
